How to contribute
Short Summary
We are working on developing a fully 3D printable respirator mask for Covid patients. The mask is open source and can be printed and used whenever needed (Please check our medical disclaimer). To develop the best possible mask for everyone, we need information about facial features and shapes from people of different ethnicities. We would be super grateful for your help and invite you to contribute by helping us get scans of different faces, so that we can adjust our mask accordingly.
You can send us a face scan using an Apple device (new iPhones or iPads) using the app SCANDY PRO. You can then use the upload form at the bottom of this page, or send it to us via email at support@soteria-facemask.com. This process takes less than 10 minutes and will help us tremendously! 🙂
Please add as much information about your origin, age-range, sex, etc.. as you feel comortable, this makes it easier to process and categorize the received scans.
Who are we?
We are a team of 7 students located in Germany and call ourselves SOTERIA. We participated and achieved first place in the Give-A-Breath-Challenge by Fraunhofer Institut and Munich Re. The challenge was about inventing a non-commercial medical device that can be easily manufactured decentralized all over the globe. Status quo
Our mask has been developed and tested primarily in germany. It has passed preliminary tests as part of the Give-A-Breath Challenge, and can be used with common respirator devices.
The data used to optimize the form and fit of the mask was based on local testsubjects. To develop masks that are adapted to different facial features and shapes, it is essential to collect further anthropometric data from people around the world.
Our next step is a pilot-project in South Africa, where the mask will be tested extensively in cooperation with Stellenbosch University.
How can you help?
Right now we have a great need for 3D scans from people of different origins. It would help us a lot if you could provide us with a facial scan to improve our design, as described below. If you don’t have the means or prefer not to do so yourself, you could still help us by forwarding our call-for-action to your friends and family. 
The more people contribute, the easier it will be for us to improve our facemask.
How to provide us with a face-scan?
The easiest way to provide us with a face-scan would be to use a mobile or tablet device with an integrated TrueDepth camera, using the app SCANDY PRO. Please save the scan as a .stl or .obj file. You can then send it to us via the form at the bottom of this page, or just email it at support@soteria-facemask.com.
The devices we know that fit this criteria are either Apple iPhones X, XS, XR, XS Max, iPad Pro (2018) & iPad Pro (2020). There are other free apps and methods that can be used to create 3D Scans, but so far we mainly used SCANDY PRO.
Our promise
Your face-scan will only be used to develop and improve our 3D printable facemask. We will never distribute or share your data with third parties. Privacy means everything to us!
